NOTES FROM STATS SA

Monthly changes in the CPAP indices

In January 2017, month-on-month percentage changes in the work group indices ranged from -2,2% for work group 126 to 5,1% for work group 120.

Noteworthy changes in the results for January 2017 are as follows:

ï‚· Work group 120: The monthly percentage increase of 5,1% reflected by this index was mainly due to a 27,1% monthly increase in the PPI for Joint Sealant, which accounts for approximately 12,0% of the work group 120 index.

ï‚· Work group 154: The monthly percentage increase of 3,2% reflected by this index was mainly due to a 14,2% monthly increase in the PPI for Bitumen, which accounts for approximately 21,0% of the work group 154 index.

ï‚· Work group 114: The monthly percentage increase of 3,1% reflected by this index was mainly due to a 3,9% monthly increase in the PPI for Reinforcing steel, which accounts for approximately 75,0% of the work group 114 index.

ï‚· Work group 126: The monthly percentage decrease of 2,2% reflected by this index was mainly due to a 6,0% monthly decrease in the PPI for Imported Meranti, which accounts for approximately 20,0% of the work group 126 index.

Note: rebasing of indices

All CPAP indices have been rebased so that December 2016 equals 100. This aligns the CPAP to the consumer price index and production price index, which also have base December 2016 equal to 100.

Rebasing is an exercise where the levels of the indices are changed so that a certain period in time is set as 100. Rebasing is required periodically to preserve the accuracy of the weights. Conversion factors are calculated to change the level of all the historical indices. The conversion factors are calculated as 100 divided by December 2016 index on base period February 1991=100 (with the exception of work group 113 with a previous base of 100 in January 2005).

The historical, published rates of change in the indices are retained.
